Tips for Being Creative When you Feel Totally “Stuck”
Ever had a good idea?
Like, a really good one, that truly excites you and you just can’t wait to make it happen??
But then as you try to dive in, something changes, ideas aren’t working, and it now feels more frustrating than exciting. THE MAGIC IS JUST GONE.
I’ve been there.
Way too often we give up on our goals and visions, because the path we chose leads to a dead end.
Even though plan A didn’t work, we tend to overlook options b through z, and just skip right to the “well that didn’t work, let’s just scrap it”.
I think as creatives it can be so exciting to think of fresh new ideas, but then things get tricky when it comes to implementation.
This exciting spark of an idea you had just moments ago, suddenly starts to fade away into a overwhelming challenge and really you just thought it would be “so much easier to do this”.
This pattern can start to become a bit cyclical where we just feel STUCK!
And the last thing we want to do is "force" our creativity...when has that ever worked for anyone, anywhere?
So today I am sharing a few tips I have learned over the years to help relax our minds and loosen up our creative flow.
Take a break
There is always a way to implement something, but sometimes you just need to take a step back.
It is perfectly okay to come back to something later – taking space isn’t a bad thing, and the LAST thing we want to do is “force” our creativity.
When we feel like we “have” to troubleshoot or brainstorm something RIGHT NOW, it can actually cause the opposite reaction within our brains – total lockup.
Push pause on the pressure of needing to figure things out, and give your mind some space. The idea will still be there when you’re ready to come back to it later.
Look for inspiration in hobbies
Sometimes the easiest way to think of an idea for something else is to distract ourselves and focus on something else for a while.
Our subconscious minds can actually work for us when we focus on other things.
Ever had a really good idea in the shower? While washing dishes or taking a walk? Yeah, this is your brain working for you in the background!
Do something that brings you joy that isn’t tremendously taxing on your noggin.
This could be anything from cooking something delicious for dinner, or scrap booking your photos from that trip you took 3 years ago.
Focus on a project that brings you joy for a little bit, and let your brain relax.
And chances are it will come to you at the exact moment your brain finally chills (in the shower, right before falling asleep…)
Ask for help
Way too often we feel like we need to go at something alone, but let’s face it, there is power in community and support.
Reach out to a mentor, your biz bestie, or someone else you trust and ask if they can brainstorm this idea with you.
Chances are they will think of something you haven’t thought of yet, and might help get those creative juices flowing again!
