Google Profile Picture Not Showing or Not Updating? Here's How to Fix It
You've got a brand-new Google Workspace account, or maybe you've had one for a while, but when your emails go out, yet your profile picture isn't showing up in other people's inboxes. Or maybe you've updated your Google profile picture, but the old one just won't go away.
Not to worry. I promise it's an easy fix.
Sometimes Google can be a bit tricky, so let’s dig in.
🚨Important Note
There are 2 main steps to this process! Make sure to follow along to the end, and don’t skip the last few steps or this change will not work.
How to Have Your Profile Picture Show Up in Your Recipients' Inboxes (for Workspace Gmail Accounts)
If you’re tired of sending out emails that show a blank icon or asking (screaming), “Why is my profile picture not showing up in Gmail?!” here’s the quick fix:
1. Log in to the Google admin console, then select Users
2. Select More Options → Allow users to edit profile
3. Make sure Profile Photo is selected/checked:
4. Next, head back to your Gmail, and click your face/Google in the top right:
5. And select the little pencil icon
6. The default is usually set to Your Organization. Instead make sure it says Visible to Everyone:
7. Give it 24 hours, and now your emails should be sending with your profile picture!
8. Make sure to repeat this final step in each email account you have for your brand.
🚨This is that important step 2 I mentioned not skipping! If you do not update your settings to Visible to Anyone, it still will only show internally!
And that’s it! With just a few quick tweaks in the Google Admin Console and Gmail, you can make sure your profile picture shows up for everyone in their inboxes. No more blank circles—just your beautiful face every time you send an email.
Updated Your Profile Picture But It's Still Not Changing?
Okay, so maybe your situation is a little different. You've uploaded a new photo, the settings look right, but your old picture (or that lovely default letter icon) is still hanging around like it didn't get the memo.
This is super common, and it's usually one of these things:
Give It Some Time
Google profile picture changes can take up to 24–48 hours to show up everywhere. That includes Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and anywhere else your profile photo appears. If you just made the change, the best move is to wait a day before troubleshooting further.
Clear Your Browser Cache
Your browser might be holding onto the old image. Try clearing your cache, or open Gmail in an incognito/private window to see if the new picture shows up there. If it does, it's just a caching issue and it'll catch up on its own.
Re-upload the Photo
Sometimes Google just needs a nudge. Go to myaccount.google.com → Personal info → Profile picture, remove the current one, and upload it again fresh. This forces Google to process it as a brand new image instead of relying on the cached version.
Check That You're Updating the Right Account
If you're logged into multiple Google accounts (which, let's be real, most of us are), double-check that you're updating the profile picture on the correct one. I've seen this trip people up more times than I can count.
Workspace Admin Settings (The Step Most People Miss)
If you're on a Google Workspace account (not a regular @gmail.com), your admin settings might be overriding your photo. This is the fix I walked through above. Even if you've uploaded a new picture, it won't update for recipients until the "Visible to Everyone" setting is turned on in your profile. Scroll back up to the full walkthrough if you haven't done that part yet.
Happy emailing!

This means you're on a Google Workspace account and your admin hasn't enabled profile photo editing for users yet. You (or whoever manages your Workspace) will need to go into the Google Admin Console → Users → More Options → and check the box next to "Profile Photo." That unlocks the ability to set and change your picture.
-
Two possible reasons. First, your Workspace admin may not have enabled profile editing (see above). Second, if you can upload a photo but it's not changing for other people, it's likely the visibility setting. Make sure your photo is set to "Visible to Everyone" instead of "Your Organization." The full walkthrough is in the tutorial above.

Usually within 24 hours, but it can take up to 48 hours to show up across all Google services (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.). If it's been longer than that and it's still not showing, try clearing your browser cache or re-uploading the image from myaccount.google.com.
-
Classic Workspace issue! Your photo visibility is probably set to "Your Organization," which means only people inside your company can see it. Everyone else sees the default colored circle with your initial. Go to your Gmail profile → click the pencil icon → and switch it to "Visible to Everyone." Do this for each email alias you use.

The Admin Console steps (Steps 1–3) are Workspace-only. Regular @gmail.com accounts don't have admin settings. But the visibility fix (Steps 4–7) and the troubleshooting tips for pictures not updating apply to both. If you're on a free Gmail account and your picture isn't showing, jump straight to the "not updating" section above.

That's Google's default when no profile picture is set, or when the picture isn't visible to the person viewing it. If you've uploaded a photo and you're still seeing the colored circle, follow the steps in this post to make sure both the admin settings and the visibility settings are configured correctly.
