Breaking Down Projects, aka Micro-Tasking
Does this sound familiar?
You’re feeling really productive. You are getting so much done in your day. It’s almost time to log off for the evening, and then you look down at your to-do list and realize ‘oh crap, I didn’t do that project’.
But no big deal, tomorrow is a fresh start. So you put it on the list for tomorrow.
And then the next day.
And the next day…
Until suddenly you realize it’s been a few weeks (or maybe a few months!) and this project still remains unfinished, and it’s really starting to stress you out.
I have totally been there, and can I let you in on a little secret? It’s not you, it’s your project approach. Its just needs a little tweak.
Ready to learn how?
Why You’re Really Not Getting It Done
The reason these bigger projects keep getting delayed?
They’re too big to accomplish in one day, but you keep trying to fit it all in anyway.
You write “create new website” on your list, and every day you see that and think “okay I need to find a new graphic designer, I need to contact my brand photographer, I want to change my domain name…”
Well no wonder this project isn’t getting done!
You are completely and totally overwhelmed just looking at your planner before you even get started. It’s like trying to cram an entire chocolate croissant into your mouth in one bite.
It’s not gonna happen.
So how do we avoid this? Break it all down.
Create Micro-Tasks
So using our example of create new website, unless you break this project down into steps as small as possible, it’s going to feel overwhelming.
The solution? Brain dump all the ideas/steps. I like to call these steps micro-tasks.
These more manageable bite-sized steps allow you to start chipping away at the overall bigger project, one step at a time.
So you have have 20 minutes now? You can buy your new domain. 1 hr tomorrow? Schedule researching graphic designers., etc!
Add These Tasks to Your Calendar
The most underrated trick to getting things done? Remember to actually schedule these tasks into your day!
By default, when our brains see blank space on our schedule, we fill it. Which means if you don’t prioritize the time to do these things, well, they won’t get done.
So make sure you break down your projects, and then actually schedule a time to get each micro task done.
And before you know it, you’ll be checking off the last micro-task item on your list and your entire project will be done!
